Leftover paint? Here's what you can do with it!

You had ordered more than enough paint just to be sure, but now you have finished painting and still have paint left over. What can you still do with it? We are happy to give you some tips.

Storage it

Sometimes you just want to save the leftover paint for later. A pot of standard white paint or varnish, for example, you will probably be able to use that later somewhere. If you just put the pot away, however, it could happen that your paint is no longer usable when you want to start working with it again.

Especially with large pots with only a little paint left in them, the paint may dry out or develop a skin. This is because a lot of air can get to the paint, and that air causes it to dry. The solution is therefore very simple: make sure that as little air as possible can touch the paint. You can do this by pouring the paint into a smaller container that can be properly sealed, such as a (clean) jam jar or an empty paint tin.

In addition, take into account other conditions that are not ideal for the paint. For example, if you store your water-based paint in the garage and it freezes there, the water base will freeze and you will not be able to use your paint afterwards.

Use it in your house

Of course, you can also use the paint as normal. For example, do you still have coloured wall paint left over? If so, you might want to think about putting an area of colour on a wall not painted in that colour. You can keep it very limited, by painting a line or strip, for example, or go very elaborate, with a circle or even a pattern. It all depends, of course, on how much paint you have left.

You can also match different parts of your interior. If you painted a door in a certain colour, you might be able to use the surplus for the window frames. If you paint a cupboard, you might be able to put another small chair, or chair legs, or an accessory in the same colour. Picture frames on the wall, for example, are also often suitable for this. What you can also do is give the inside of a cabinet a colour.

If you look around in and around your home, you will often find something you could still use the remaining paint for. Did you paint your windows along the inside, and is your paint also suitable for outdoor use? If you have enough left, you could possibly paint the outside as well.

Creative projects

In our Christmas interior blog from last winter, we already gave a nice suggestion: an alternative Christmas tree made from painted wreck wood. You can also, for example, paint a homemade picture frame out of wreck wood, or make something else of wall decoration with it.

Did you get to work with your paint scraps and do something fun with them? We are very curious about the results! Send us a photo via email or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram with #Tintrio.
